Reception Sound 101 – Microphones and Speakers
Besides the ceremony itself, one of the most memorable moments of any wedding is the speeches. There’s a lot to think about here..
- Is the best man going to be able to be heard?
- There’s a lot of people at my wedding, how will the last table hear?
- Will it be clear enough for everyone to understand!?
…We can help you with all of these questions.
For the wedding reception, wireless hand-held mics are often the best option. One or two are perfect here, but you can have as many as you like - the more the merrier! With the microphone being wireless, the speaker has the freedom to move around the room with no unsightly cables dragging behind – this also helps avoid people tripping and falling over wires.
If you want even more freedom, we can give you a wireless headset microphone - nearly invisible nowadays - which allows for both hands to be free during the speech. We tend to avoid lapel mics for wedding speeches (sometimes known as lavaliere or tie-clip) as they often need a bit more attention from an engineer. We have recently invested in some brand new Sennheiser G4 wireless systems, which provide several options. They’re great sounding, industry standard and bullet proof. A great fit for weddings.
Choosing the right speakers for the reception shouldn’t be a hassle either. They should sound great as well as fit in with the overall look of your wedding. Depending on the size of the reception, the number of guests and room size, our go-to speakers for weddings are active loudspeakers. They are also quick and easy to set up, there’s no need for separate amplifiers and ultimately, they’re good value.
If you are after a really high-quality option - say you’ve got a band playing or just want to have an unforgettable music experience - a passive loudspeaker system will definitely deliver on quality.
