WAC Arts Hire Sound System and Lighting Equipment
"I FELT LIKE FLIPSIDE UNDERSTOOD WHAT WE WERE TRYING TO ACHIEVE, THE PRICE WAS GOOD AND I COULD TELL FROM OUR DISCUSSIONS THAT WE'D WORK WELL TOGETHER"
The WAC Arts annual WAWA weekender at the Old Town Hall, Belsize Park needed the expertise of Flipside to help them enjoy quality sound and atmospheric lighting at the 40 years of WAC Arts celebrations.
WAC Arts provide inclusive performing arts and media programmes for young people aged 5-26 and the festival is an annual celebration of empowering young people and creativity. This year was an extra special celebration, with WAC Arts hitting their 40th birthday and the building in which they operate from, the Old Town Hall celebrating 140 years.
Teaming up with WAC Arts
Having been quoted by someone he had previously used, Glenn Middleditch, Head of Venue Management & Hires at WAC Arts came across Flipside online when looking for sound hire and was immediately impressed with the service and expertise on offer. He said:
“From the outset, I felt I had much more engagement from Flipside and was impressed with the service.”
The festival covers off a wide range of events across the weekend so this was a big project for us to get stuck into in order to meet the needs of all the performances, which also meant a substantial set of kit was also required.
Lighting & Sound System Hire For a Weekend Event
As always, we pride ourselves on excellent and professional equipment to ensure our clients are not disappointed. We love our equipment and what we do, so we bring this enthusiasm to every event. The PA provided was a modest but punchy left and right configuration of TW Audio M12 mid-tops over the TW Audio B18 subwoofers.
With it being a 3-day festival, there were plenty of events going on that required the best in the business tech. Saturday night was a disco, and what’s a disco without a half metre mirror ball? We brought this along with two powerful Chauvet Intimidator 140SR Hybrid Fixtures to give the dancefloor an awesome look. Around the outside of the room, our Showtec up lighters and haze machine topped it all off.
Our industry-standard DJ Kit accommodates a mixer swap of an Allen & Health XONE:92 mixer for a DJM-900 Nexus 2, which was requested last minute by one of the artists.
Revolution is a loose alliance of poets, singers, playwrights, rappers, actors and musicians who all team up to perform in order to support WAC Arts. Actor Ché Walker set the tone for the evening ahead with his warm and energetic personality and his curated list of acts was a real treat for all those in attendance.
With the acts that followed mainly spoken word or singing, we deployed industry-standard SM58’s as a great all-rounder mic. With the FOH mixing position rather distant, we used an AB-168 stage box with an Allen & Heath Qu-16 (sixteen inputs & eight outputs) which was perfect for the events of the evening and helped provide superior sound quality.
According to a WAC Arts colleague at the event, our very own Harry Day remained composed throughout the Sunday event, which is notoriously chaotic and described as a ‘happening’ rather than a show, something that doesn’t surprise us one bit as his skills and knowledge are always up to the test!
A Successful Festival
Despite the event space being new to the organisers, both from the perspective of Flipside and Glenn who had only started in his role six months prior to the event, through teamwork and expertise in sound and lighting equipment, the 40th birthday festival was a success. Expertise is invaluable when it comes to large events, as the equipment needs to stand up to the test and meet the demands of the venue. Glenn commented that:
"I learned as much about the Old Town Hall in the week of the festival as I had since I started in March".
Communication is key when it comes to bigger projects such as this, and at Flipside we love to work closely with our clients to ensure we deliver the best possible experience. WAC Arts are doing some incredible work and it was amazing to be part of their festival. Hopefully, we will back for future events!
